review:
'Proteus Vex: Another Dawn' by Michael Carrol, Henry Flint and Jake Lynch is a graphic novel that rewards the patient reader.

In a very strange galaxy two races have fought for 14 centuries until it dramatically ended. In this world ex-soldier Proteus Vex finds himself in the midst of a conspiracy and a secret that some would rather not be exposed.

This was a bit of a challenging graphic novel to get in to, but I stuck with it and ended up liking it. The story is pretty strange, but the art is even stranger. I liked it and I wouldn't mind visiting this universe again.

'The Lady and the Unicorn' by Beatrice Fontanel with illustrations by Vanessa Hie is a picture book that makes up a story based on the famous Unicorn Tapestries.

With illustrations inspired by the Unicorn Tapestries, we get a story of men hunting, fairies and a unicorn. The men leave a mess in their wake in their search for the unicorn. The unicorn is hotly pursued and close to getting caught when it is rescued by a lady.

There is an afterword that talks about the tapestries and shows details in them that the book uses. The story is magical as are the beautiful illustrations.

'We Adopted a Baby Chick' with words and pictures by Lori Joy Smith is the story of a family who adopts a baby chick.

Albert the sheep was previously adopted by the family. Imagine his jealousy when they now adopt a baby chick who is smaller, fluffier and cuter than he is. Is Albert still even needed?

This is a sequel, but I don't know that you need to read that one, but this book is so cute, you will probably want to. The lessons in sibling rivalry are obvious, but taught gently. The illustrations are simple but easy for young readers to follow.

'The Juneteenth Story' by Alliah L. Agostini with illustrations by Sawyer Cloud is a picture book telling the story of the new national holiday.

Two years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, the news finally reached Texas and became a day to celebrate and remember. The holiday slowly spread as families moved to other states, but it was still largely unknown until the President made it a holiday for everyone to celebrate.

Filled with facts and wonderful pictures, I really enjoyed learning more about this holiday and feeling sad that it took this long to learn about it.

'Rodney Was a Tortoise' by Nan Forler with illustrations by Yong Ling Kang is a picture books for young readers about a girl who loses someone very precious to her.

Bernadette has a pet tortoise named Rodney and they are best friends. He's great at staring contests, but eats pretty slowly. Rodney is pretty old, and it seems like he will be around forever, until he isn't. Now Bernadette has to figure out how to live without Rodney and that is really hard.

This book made me ugly cry, and that is wonderful. I really felt for poor Bernadette and her loss. The illustrations are really quite nice. This may not be a book for every occasion, but I think it's probably the right one for some.

'The Smurfs #24: The Smurf Reporter' by Peyo is a graphic novel about a village of famous blue characters.

This time around, one of the Smurfs gets the idea that the old way of getting news isn't working. This leads to the creation of a printing press and finding gossip to fill the pages which leads to comedy and bad feelings. This also leads to a plot by Gargamel to capture the Smurfs.

It's fun and also kind of a send up of news and news culture. The satire is pretty strong here and makes for a good story.

When Earth is threatened by an invasion that may have been waiting all along, it's up to Captain Harlock and his crew to save the world. The mysterious Mazons have arrived from the icy depths and even old enemies put truces together to win.

The art is great, but this book suffers from way too much exposition. I do remember watching some of the original series, but I had a hard time maintaining much interest in this overly wordy story where everything had a lengthy explanation.

The original Angels star in this comic. Jill, Kelly and Sabrina are working undercover in a nightclub when they are suddenly swept into a larger conspiracy. that will involve an imposter Charlie giving orders and attempts to assassinate President Jimmy Carter.

It feels like an episode of the old show, but not an especially good one. There isn't much here for new fans and the only value might be for nostalgia. The art works ok with the story.

'Scout Is Not a Band Kid' with story and art by Jade Armstrong is a graphic novel about a young girl who joins band under false pretenses.

When Scout finds out that her favorite author will be at a end of year festival along with her school's band, she sees it as a chance to meet her idol. She joins band and ends up in the trombone section, even though she doesn't know how to play or read music. Soon she is being tutored by the first trombone who takes band very seriously and can't stand what Scout is doing.

As a band nerd, and former trombone player, I enjoyed this story of a person with no right to be in band who finds her place. The art was fine for the story, but I hope there is more color in the finished product.

Aurelia goes with Healer to see if this new plague can be stopped. Along the way, they find a surprising ally, but is Dracula really gone?

'The High House' by Jessie Greengrass is a novel about an eco catastrophe in the near future.

In the near future, the inevitable forces a climate scientist named Francesca to create a refuge for her son and step-daughter. The house has two caretakers, Grandy a jack of all trades and his granddaughter Sally. When calamity hits and before Francesca perishes, she sends her stepdaughter Caro and her son Paulie to the house for shelter.

The book tells the story weaving between the years, as bees and birds and people disappear from the planet until it appears that the only inhabitants left are those of the High House.

The writing is strong with breathtaking prose. While it's not a happy subject, seeing it through the eyes of these survivors makes it even keener. I heartily recommend this book, especially to those fans of similar works by Margaret Atwood.

'The Change: New York: The River That Runs Both Ways' by Guy Adams is book 5 of the series about changes that have made Earth a really strange place to live.

The survivors of Coney Island are making their escape by boat along the Hudson River, but this is The Change, so things will not be easy. From cannibalistic fisherman on the Narrows Bridge to a never-ending fight across the river with Grace and her friends right in the crossfire.

I've enjoyed this weird series and I've got one more book to read. This installment felt a bit like not much was going on to advance the story, so I thought it was a weaker entry, but the series has evoked some surreal images, like the one this time of the giant, living Statue of Liberty.

I liked this read, but wasn't as engaged as with other Alastair Reynolds novels. It's possible that my reading tastes have change over the years. It was nice to see some nods to the Inhibitor Trilogy as a sort of easter egg in the novel.

A young boy named Hiro lives unnoticed on the island until they are noticed by military bullies and Hiro's father is killed trying to shield his son. A samurai robot, known as a yojimbot, takes the young boy under his protection as they seek revenge.

It's a pretty interesting premise, but the book is a bit short, so just as it got interesting, the story ended. The art is pretty cool, and it looks like I'll need to seek out more issues of this one.

review:
'Beyond The Breach Vol. 1' by Ed Brisson with art by Damian Couciero is a graphic novel about probably the weirdest road trip ever.

Vanessa is going through a rough patch after losing her mother and finding out her boyfriend is cheating with her sister, so she decides a road trip is in order. When her journey is interrupted by strange monsters from other dimensions, she finds herself caring for a young boy named Dougie and an other-worldly cat named Kai. There is also a stranger riding a gigantic tortoise that seems to have a better handle on what is happening. Survival is better with more, but it may not be possible in this weird world.

It's a fast read with lots of violence, which is fine, but it left me with lots of questions. I suppose that's for the next volume. The art is good and creature designs are pretty horrific.

review:
'Dinosaur Explorers Vol. 4: Trapped in the Triassic' by Albbie with art by Redcode is a graphic novel about time travellers moving through different eras in search of dinosaurs.

The crew find themselves in the Triassic era and with more dangerous creatures, Dr. Da Vinci has made a nifty vehicle for the kids to move around in. The problems come when the kids argue over who gets to drive and Emily storms off in to danger.

Along the way, the reader learns cool facts about the creatures of the era. The art style is a kind of manga style and the story should keep younger readers engaged.

review:
'Sci-Fu Vol. 2: It Takes 2' with story and art by Yehudi Mercado is a graphic novel that returns to a world of rap, kung-fu and robots.

Wax, the newly crowned king of planet Discopia, is back and just wants things to be normal, but nothing can be normal as robots start showing up, including one that looks like Wax and fights like him. With the pressure building, he says harsh things to his BFF Cooky, but Wax is going to learn that it takes all your friends to win your biggest battles.

I just love the vibe of this series with it's love of old kung-fu movies and old school rap. The art is vibrant and fun too.
