review:
'The Toys' Christmas' by Claire Clement with illustrations by Genevieve Godbout is a charming picture book about the job of old toys at Christmas time.

Noah's toy Elephant, Fanfan, goes missing on Christmas Eve. We follow Fanfan's journey to the North Pole along with all the other older, well-loved toys. They have special messages to pass along to Santa Claus.

This is a cute book that I should have reviewed way before the Christmas season. The story is warm and wonderful and the illustrations by Genevieve Godbout are wonderful.

'Friends Change the World: We Are NASA Scientists' by Zoë Tucker with illustrations by Amanda Quartey is a picture book about two of the scientists who helped get astronauts in to space.

Mary Jackson was really good at math. So good that she got a job at NASA, but she worked there during segregation. She met a scientist named Kaz Czarnecki and they became friends and helped each other at work. Their friendship lasted for decades because of mutual respect that crossed any racial barriers.

I loved this story which tackles a difficult topic, but shows how friends can help each other out. The illustrations are just fantastic, too!

'Michael Jordan' by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara with illustrations by Lo Harris is an ebook in the Little People, Big Dreams which features biographies for young readers.

As the 4th child in his family, little Michael Jordan was always competitive, especially with his older brother Larry. His parents encouraged their kids to play all kinds of sports. When he didn't get a spot on his school basketball team, his mother gave him some good advice and the rest is history.

As a Michael Jordan fan, I'm familiar with much of his story, and it's distilled nicely here with some encouraging words for young readers.

'Timothy Top Book One: The Green Pig' with story and art by Gud is a graphic novel for younger readers about a young boy and a tree that is in danger.

Timothy Top lives in a house with parents who argue. He's also a bit of an outsider at school. Every day on his way to school, he passes a park with an old tree. When a rich businessman wants to reinvent the park and cut down the tree, Timothy Top has to find a way to stop him.

This is kind of a weird story, but I liked it. The main character has a pretty odd sense of imagination, which probably helps his cope with his world. The art is decent enough and I think young readers might be able to relate.

This is a really fantastic story and I really liked getting an inside look at this particular job. The art is also fantastic. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this!

Solal and his sister Eva live the best they can, with Solal repairing things and looking after his little sister. When her medicine runs out, they have to brave the "Wall' a separated community of the wealthy, but they find strange secrets in that world that proves it to be less than ideal.

I like the idea of this, but it jumps back and forth in time and it was hard to follow. The art is good but rough and is also a bit hard to follow. I like the premise, I just wish it all flowed a bit better.

review:
'When I Grow Up: The Lost Autobiographies of Six Yiddish Teenagers' with editing and art by Ken Krimstein is a graphic novel of stories of six Eastern European teenagers right before WWII.

In 2017, a trove of lost Yiddish writing was found in a church in Lithuania. Ken Krimstein, a New Yorker cartoonist, selected some entries in a contest by Yiddish teenagers. The rules stated that the contestants had to be anonymous, so with the exception of one entrant who broke the rules, no one knows what happened to these young writers on the eve of World War II.

There is poignancy and humor to be had here. The promise of futures that were cut short or tragically changed. The art works here and there are lots of words in the Yiddish language to pick up along the way.

review:
'Wrapped Up Vol. 2' by Dave Scheidt and a host of artists is a graphic novel about Milo, the mummy boy and his adventures.

As in the first volume, this book contains a series of unlinked stories, but by different artists. Milo goes on a camping trip and find a hungry sasquatch. Milo's dad is in a fighting contest. Milo's weird wizard friend does weird wizard stuff. These are just a few of the stories.

As in the last volume, things get a bit weird, so I'm not entirely sure who the target audience is. It seems like a kid's title, but I'm not so sure. The various artists are fun, if a bit uneven.

A young man named Mane shows up in Irap to join the Pankat school there. He falls in with some shady characters, and learns that the leader of his fighting school has dangerous plans.

I did end up liking this but the art was kind of similar and I had a hard time telling characters apart. It got easier as the book went but took a while. There are also some pages with way too many panels on them to get the whole story in. The art is good and this graphic novel includes the author's character designs and a cover gallery.

This time around, it's Winter. A fox with a long scarf is trying to stay warm. He keeps getting tangled in his long scarf and frustrated. He tries to flirt with another fox and his mishaps just get worse, and he thinks she is laughing at him. Along the way, we see a certain familiar character from the last story.

There is no judge or jury here, only execution, but the next concern is how to kill or corral Pumpkinhead so it stops killing.

The joys of reading are many and accessible. Reading the thoughts of a famous author on the topic is a treat.

Becstar is lucky, and there is a reason for that. She lives in secret, or so she thinks, until her past catches up with her. It turns out that her luck is caused by a relic she found and one of her old band of treasure hunters wants to reunite it with the others.

review:
'The Last Stand of the Tin Can Soldiers' the book by James D. Hornfishcer with adaptation by Doug Murray and art by Steven Sanders is a graphic novel adaptation of a non-fiction book about a World War II battle in the Pacific.

In October of 1944, Allied forces were landing on the island of Leyte near the Philippines. A small task force called Taffy 3 made up of a handful of destroyers and escort ships and planes finds themselves squaring off against the Japanese Center Force and finding themselves extremely outgunned. They make a stand that made the history books.

This is a really good adaptation. Doug Murray keeps the narrative concise and doesn't overload the frames with prose. The art is also a nice crisp style. Do be warned that it is suddenly quite graphically violent at times.

In a simpler take on biographies than the Little People, Big Dreams series, we get a board book for toddlers with less words on the page. With bright, simple illustrations and abbreviated content, this is designed for a busy child's attention span.

It certainly works in the format designed. I don't know how much a small child would retain, but it's a nice book.

'Phoebe and Her Unicorn in Unicorn Theater' with story and art by Dana Simpson takes a turn with this volume and tells one big story instead of a collection of strips.

Phoebe for her camp project decides to write a musical and Marigold's sister lets her in on some secrets. Phoebe learns some lessons about friendship along the way.

I liked the lessons and story and the longer connected story. I felt like the original musical segment went on a bit too long for my tastes, but the story bits around it were nice.
