'War and Peace: The Graphic Novel' by Leo Tolstoy with adaptation by Alexandr Poltorak with art by Dmitry Chukhrai is a pretty ambitious project.

Taking place during the Napoleoic attack on Moscow, this story follows the lives of various people with various fortunes. In one storyline a man inherits his father's fortune. In others there are romance plots and the lives of those marching in the army.

I have never finished War and Peace, so I don't know if this adaptation will help someone write a successful book report, but it feels like a good overview of the main plots. The art style is meant to mimic painting of the era, but to me it felt a bit oversaturated and a bit unclear. I still liked reading this though.

In a series of lush illustrations, we follow a unicorn from the dawn of unicorns through to the birth of a new unicorn. A tiny faun and a fairy accompany the unicorn through blowing petals, flocks of birds and blowing leaves.

The verse that weaves through the book brings a good weight to the art and is really nice, but the illustrations are really why I liked this book.

Oxana, a dancer from the end of the 19th century, is a brilliant dancer. While dancing the Sleeping Beauty ballet, she is cursed to sleep by a spurned admirer and when she awakens, it's the present day. She somehow knows that she needs to complete the dance and with the help of some talented students, she just might.

The curse, in this volume, only seems to bring this fish out of water to our world, and without it, I lost interest in the story. It may be a more interesting story arc overall, but I found it dull. I did like Karina's manga style art.

It was hard to like the main character, and I think we are supposed to. It makes what happens later in the story mean less.

Poor Wee Boo is too tiny to scare anyone, and she wants to be accredited like the other ghosts. She is given a third chance. When she fails to scare a child, and instead makes it laugh, she thinks she might have found a new calling.

This book was pretty adorable. Wee Boo is cute and decidedly not scary, but the other ghosts do come across a bit scary, so it might be best to thumb through this first for sensitive young readers.

Pauline lives with her parents and 2 younger siblings with another on the way. The house is loud and she is always getting blamed for doing too much or too little. She has a hideout, but it's time to move on, so she starts to plan.

This was a sweet story that made me laugh. The art is pretty great too! I love stories that have charm and heart and I think older siblings will relate to Pauline.

'The Atrocities' by Jeremy C. Shipp was a novella that I wanted to absolutely love, and for most of it, I did.

When Danna Valdez is hired for a governess job, the creepy hedge maze just to get to the front door should have been her first warning. The gruesome art lining all the walls should have shooed her away. When Danna finds out that the child she is hired to teach is dead, and believed to be a ghost, I realized that Danna is made of sterner stuff than me.

The gorgeous prose created such a great mood. The mix of gothic creepiness with the reminders that this is the modern age were handled deftly. Some of the supporting characters were cluelessly ignorant, and they helped lighten up the story. I was hoping for a really interesting ending, but the ending left me a little disappointed. I still really enjoyed reading this gothic, creepy novel.

'Stories for Boys Who Dare to Be Different' by Ben Brooks with illustrations by Quinton Winter is a book of short biographies of men who changed the world with alternate methods to violence.

There are 77 one page biographies in this book. There are feminists, pacifists, men who were gay or otherwise oppressed and men who changed the world in other non-violent ways. The names featured include Alan Turing, Bill Gates, and Tank Man, among many others.

Each biography includes a great full color illustration (my favorite is the one for Frederick Douglass). The title including the word 'Stories' might be a tad misleading since this is all non-fiction, but the stories are compelling and interesting, for the most part.

It's a good adaptation. I'm not sure the themes of love, divorce and affairs would interest the grade level this is intended for, but it's a great story and the illustrations are quite nice.

Willow lives near the woods and knows them pretty well. She was taught by her mother and father, but now her mother is gone and Willow is sad and angry. One day when she is in the woods, she meets a forest creature named Pilu and helps her get back home. they both have things to teach each other.

This was such an excellent read in story and art. I love the storyline, but I adored the art with it's heavy lines and beautiful depictions. Highly recommended.

Mae Jemison dreamed of going to space when she was young. She was inspired by Star Trek and specifically Nichelle Nichols. It took her a while because NASA had to change, but she became an astronaut and inspired young people. She even showed up on an episode of Star Trek!

I love the Mae Jemison story and it's told here very well. The illustrations are great too!

The setting is the freeing of Greece from the Ottoman empire. Pirates attack ships for cargo. Among those is Greek pirate Nikolas Starkos. Starkos is vying for a woman that has been promised to French lieutenant Henry d'Albaret, but she has gone missing.

The adaptation is fine, I just think the story has a bit too much melodrama in it for modern sensibilities. The art works, but, like the story, feels a bit heavy-handed.

This was a fun story for younger readers (and baseball fans), and the art is really great! I'm not sure young readers will get all the baseball name puns, but I could be wrong.

It took a while for this to feel much like a fantasy novel, but I enjoyed this story. There are also a whole lot of characters, but the cast is handled deftly and I felt able to keep things sorted out.

The lesson here is beautiful as are the illustrations. I liked this story of a child who finds a simple way to help.

'The Old Geezers: Volume 1' by Wilfrid Lupano with art by Paul Cauuet is a graphic novel about growing old, but sometimes not necessarily growing up.

Antoine, Emile and Pierrot have been friends since boyhood. They grew up and grew apart ideologically. In the first story, a common friend has died and brings them all back together to reminisce about playing pirates as boys or protesting together.

In the second story, an act of kindness creates a crisis for one of the gentleman when he receives a mysterious package signed by someone he lost years ago. The plan to correct it involves striking back at an annoying bread chain.

The aged aren't typically depicted like this in American literature. Leave it to the French to show that just because we get older, doesn't mean we aren't up for some mischief with old friends. The art is fun and detailed. I really liked the story and the characters.

In a feudal Japan where Oni and other demons live, a couple pray for a child. Their answer is a 6 inch boy who will be the hope of his people. Issunboshi trains with a blind samurai and learns that the size of the heart means more than the size of the warrior.

I enjoyed this story and the art is fantastic! My review copy was in black and white and I really hope that the final work is in color, but if it's not, it's still a darn good read.

'Kawaii Doodle Cuties' by Pic Candle and Zainab Khan is a book that will show you how to draw hundreds of things from all over the world in the Kawaii Cutie style.

After a brief introduction and list of tools and tips and tricks, the book is divided in to various chapters. There are chapters on food, natural wonders, animals and birds, architecture and more. In each chapter are some step by step directions and then a page of other ideas in the category. The book ends with a series of fun search & find puzzles that were a lot of fun.

I loved how every instruction ended with 'Draw a cute face, of course.' It made me smile every time I saw it (and I saw it a lot in this book). The instructions seem mostly easy to follow. There were a few more complex drawings that didn't look as easy, but that means the book has appeal to most skill levels.

It's Summer and that means it's hot! It also means there is ice cream to be had and pools to cool off in. It also means a Summer vacation to the beach where Earl and Mooch meet some new creatures like a mussel and a really grouchy crab.

These are fun comics and a good collection for younger readers. The art style is pretty unique and I've enjoyed this series.

During World War II, Prague was under siege from the Nazis. There was a struggling resistance, and a population in hiding to avoid being sent to the death camps. A lone doctor tries to fight in his own way until he discovers a strange monster from the past waiting to be awakened in the Synagogue.

It never helps a reviewer when they've read a similar story told better elsewhere. There is nothing wrong with this one, and there were some nice empathy moments in the story. The art is not up to the par of 'Something is Killing the Children' but it's darkness works well here.

Along the way, they pick up other allies, discover some of Talli's secrets, and meet the relentless Captain Nina, who may be a match for Talli's new friends.

The art is a pretty great manga style that I quite liked. The story doesn't complete in this volume, but it is a tight plot and an interesting world so far.

Along with tales I was familiart with, like Snow White and The Frog Prince, are a few I was less familiar with like The Three Great Noodles and Toads and Pearls.

The seven stories in this collection are retold in a fresh way that I really enjoyed. In the Author's Note at the end, it's stated that the idea was not to change the meanings for modern sensibilities, but to tell them in a kind of oral tradition method. One that works well for this collection.

'The Heart of the Storm: A Biography of Sue Bird' by Sharon Mentyka with illustrations by Ellen Rooney is a picture book biography about the Seattle Storm legend.

In this book, I learned why Sue Bird wears the number 10 and why she wears her hair in a particular style on game day. I learned that she loved other sports like soccer, but basketball became her main love. There are all the accolades and trophies and proof that she is the Greatest Of All Time.

The book is great, but some pages seemed overly wordy for young readers. The illustrations are also really great, and I recommend this inspiring story.
