review:
'The Fake-Chicken Kung Fu Fighting Blues' by Aaron Lam is a middle grade ebook about moving to a new town and trying to find your way.

When Anthony's family moves him from Chinatown out to a small town in the province, there are a lot of things he misses. He makes new friends when he stands up to a bully. He learns about his town when he makes a video for his housebound grandmother who is wary of her new town. He learns that his new town is not so bad.

I'm not sure what I expected based on the title, but I liked what I read and it would be a fun book to recommend to younger readers.

'Sister BFFs' by Philippa Rice is a book of comics about sibling sisters who constantly bicker about things.

Two sisters who are grown but still living at home fight each other about everything from who cleans to exes to how much money you'd kiss Tom Jones for. There are job searches and funny text exchanges. There are comments about body odors and how they dress.

It's all pretty funny. It feels like it is taken from real life. I've liked the author/artists other collections and this was different, but still funny.

'Valiant High' by Daniel Kibblesmith with art by Derek Charm and David Baron is a fun graphic novel look at Valiant's heroes as teenagers.

Valiant High is where you will find the young superheroes of the Valiant universe. Aric "X-O Manowar" Dacia is the star running back. Ninjak is a foreign exchange student. Faith and Livewire are best friends just trying to navigate their way through high school, especially when danger suddenly seems to be lurking.

This was a lot of fun to read, and even pretty funny in places. The characters younger selves seemed to be well thought out, and the art reminded me of other high school type comics I read.

'Pantomime' by Christopher Sebela with art by David Stoll is a graphic novel about a group of students who commit burglaries.

After Haley and Max's mother dies, they are sent to Wayfair Academy, a school for the deaf. They make friends there and find a common interest: planning and committing burglaries. This works until they fall into the clutches of a local gangster who makes them work for him. Now they just want out.

I really liked this group of characters and the suspenseful story. I liked the word bubbles emanating from the characters palms. The art is good too.

'The Accursed Vampire' with story and art by Madeline McGrane is a middle grade graphic novel about a grouchy vampire.

Dragoslava became a vampire when he was small, so he remains a kid in stature. His bad behavior has led him to be cursed by a witch he refused to help, so now he runs errands for a witch with a bad temper. Fortunately he has other vampire kid friends, unless he drives them off with his moodiness.

This is a pretty adorable story and I instantly related to little Drago. The art is really a lot of fun and I liked the character design quite a bit.

'Police in a Pod 1' with story and art by Miko Yasu is a manga about a rookie police officer learning her job.

Kawai is new to the police force and she is already fed up with the job. That is, until she meets the new female directore of the station. She is stretched in a series of different scenarios like a school PR trip, helping a runaway teen, and even an autopsy.

There could have been something interesting here, but the story makes odd jumps and there is just an underlying meanness to it that I didn't like. The art is good. I just wish I'd liked it more.

'Things Heroes Say: A Fantasy Artbook & Phrasebook' by Bryn Jones is an ebook for any adventurer who has found themselves stuck looking for something witty to say.

The book has painted scenes from fantasy adventures done in a nice minimalist style. Interspersed with the art are pages in a kind of word cloud format full of comebacks and bold statements for situations like 'When You Reach Your Destination' or 'When Your Fighting a Bear With a Sword.'

There are some really funny things in this book for anyone who has been in a fantasy roleplaying game. The art is pretty cool. This might make a decent gift book for your favorite gamer.

'WPA Buildings: Architecture and Art of the New Deal' by Joseph Maresca is a look at the art and architecture of federal buildings that were built in the 1930s and 1940s.

This book looks at blocky imposing goverment buildings and sees them in a new light. With lots of pictures, the similarities of a style called Moderne becomes evident. Inside details are looked at as well, including a whole chapter on new deal murals featured in these buildings, many now hidden from the public.

I gained a whole new appreciation for these boxy buildings that were built to bring a sense of weight and purpose to a country that desperately needed it.

'Quincredible Vol. 2: The Hero Within' by Rodney Barnes with illustrations by Selina Espiritu is the sophomore graphic novel about a new hero who is invulnerable.

Quinton West is still trying to figure out his identity now that he has powers. He also has an encounter with the mysterious Madame Adelaide, the missing aunt of the girl he really likes. The heart of the story involves a new construction project that is being built on sacred ground.

There is a bit of a time jump between volumes, but I think that is from other books in this universe. This story felt a lot more coherent to me this time and I liked it better. The art is ok, but I'd like to see them up their game on this title.

Calexa Rose Dunhill is tired of sleeping outside, but by now she's made some friends so mayber her luck is changing. There is also a detective out looking for her, but she doesn't know why. She doesn't know much of anything, and her friends wonder why no one is looking for her, but they are wrong.

I did not read the first two volumes, but had no problem figuring out what was going on. The story has some light supernatural elements to it and a likeable enough protagonist. I wanted things to work out for her. The art by Geraldo Borges is a nice touch.

'A Real Job' with story and art by Alberto Madrigal is a graphic novel about a young man who moves to a foreign country suddenly.

Javi lives in Spain and suddenly decides to move to Berlin, even though he doesn't speak the language. He wants to pursue his dream of becoming a comic book artist. He gets a job with a big tech company, but finds that he lacks the time and purpose to pursue his dreams.

If my description seems lackluster, so is this graphic novel. There is likely a better way to write this story. It lacked interest for me, which is too bad, because I did really like the art.

Baki shows up at school with bruises all over. Meanwhile, a series of death row convicts are making impossible prison breaks. They seem to all be unstoppable killers. All are heading to Tokyo and express the same reason: A taste of defeat.

It definitely feels like a good preface for a massive series of fights. We get a small taste at the end of the manga. The art is fun and the violence is brutal and cartoonlike.

review:
'The Ghoul Next Door' by Cullen Bunn with art by Cat Farris is a creepy graphic novel for young readers about making new strange friends.

Grey likes the graveyard in his town. It makes a nice shortcut to school and he even made a model of it for a school project. Now, someone is creeping around his house and leaving him strange gifts. It's Livonia, a ghoul who lives in the graveyard and wants to be his friend. But, there are those who don't think they should be friends and they will have to take a strange journey to save their friendship and Grey's life.

I liked this spooky story of ghouls, a scary witch, and a whole bunch of rats. The art is great and I love the moral of not being afraid of someone because of how they look or the weird food they might eat.

'Creature!' with story and art by Shingo Honda is a manga about a large creature attacking a city.

Akira Takashiro is a student who plays basketball. He is rivals with another boy for the affections of their mutual friend, but none of that matters because suddenly a giant monster attacks. The body parts pile up as Akira escapes school with another student and finds that the carnage is everywhere.

The gore level is high in this one, but I liked it. We don't find out why the monster showed up and started attacking, nor is there a lot of help or hope given to our characters. The art is pretty great. I liked this action packed story.

'Piranesi' by Susanna Clarke is the author's second full length book and my book club's pick for June.

A man named Piranesi traverses a large house with rooms full of statues. The bottom floor is water, the top is air, mist and rain. He survives with what the house gives him, and what The Other brings. He writes enigmatic journal entries, and slowly we learn what has happened.

I loved the author's first book, and this one as well. It's a slow burn but rewards the patient reader (give the book about half before you toss it at the wall in frustration) with a story of intrigue and the horrific mystery of how he came to be in this labyrinthine house.

review:
'Goldilocks and the Infinite Bears: A Pie Comics Collection' by John McNamee is a book collecting some funny comic strips with quirks at the end.

The subjects are various fantasy characters among others. There is Robin Hood, the frog prince and, of course, Goldilocks, who breaks in to the bears house and finds infinite bowls of porridge, a punishment for porridge thieves. In one, a man wants to combine the powers of Thor, Green Lantern and a werewolf. The twists are where the punch line lies. The oddness of them makes them pretty funny.

I've read another collection by this author. The art is pretty simplified, but suits the humor well. The real draw here is the humor where the odd and dark punchlines jump out at the unsuspecting reader.

'Alone in Space: A Collection' with stories and art by Tillie Walden is a graphic novel collection of short stories and art by Hugo-nominated cartoonist Tillie Walden.

The main longer story is 'The End of Summer' about a group of people living in a castle with a large cat named Nemo and some tense family relationships. Other stories focus on various stages of relationships.

In a style inspired by Winsor McKay and Hayao Miyazaki, characters are larger than the areas they live in. The whole thing has a dreamlike feel, but also borders on melancholy. I loved the tone of the stories and art in this collection. It's got the feel of ephemera at times, but I think that fits the art quite well, a loose disconnected style that speaks to our inner longings.

'The Return of Smurfette' from Papercutz is a series of fun short stories about Smurfette and how the other smurfs try to get her attention and her heart.

Smurfette doesn't live around the other Smurfs, but she does come around to visit. When she does, the other Smurfs always make a big deal of it. In the three main stories in this book along with the shorts, Smurfette plays a part, either in character or in motive. Gargamel shows up to try to capture Smurfs in his specially designed garden full of traps. The Smurfs celebrate Halloween. And Papa Smurf celebrates a birthday.

The stories are cute, and there are some stories by Peyo included in this collection. I'm not the biggest Smurf fan around, but this would be a fun read for younger readers.

Of course Will wears it all the time which has bad consequences that his big sister, Courtney, may not be able to deal with.

I adored the original series starring Courtney Crumrin, so this is a welcome return, and it doesn't disappoint. I was immediately back in Courtney's world with her scowling face. If you were a fan of the original series, this is a must.

'Incidentals Vol. 2: Balance of Power' with story by Joe Casey and art by Will Rosado is a graphic novel in the series about 'The Event,' a cosmic event that granted certain people strange powers.

'The Event' granted random powers. Some people adapted better than others. Bo Vincent Chen sees a bigger event heading to Earth and wants to stop it. He tries to bring together a team of powered folks, but that is harder than he imagines.

'Seeking: Dad 2.0' by Gwendoline Raisson with illustrations by Magali Le Huche is about a Mothers Anonymous group and the humorous and tender stories about parenting.

When Philippe arrives to the Mothers Anonymous group, things are a bit awkward because he's the only man, but it is soon realized that parenting struggles cross gender boundaries. The story mainly follows Caroline, a single mother, who is trying to figure out how to have a life and be a good mother.

I liked this story. It was funny and warm and touching. I really liked the different perspectives that were shown throughout the book. The illustrations are more on the cartoony side, but they work well for the story.

review:
'The Provocative Collette' with story and art by Annie Goetzinger is a graphic novel about Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette during a specific period in her life.

Colette was born in a less well off family and married off to womanizer at the age of 20. This graphic novel shows Colette as powerful and capable. Her early writing was taken by her husband, whom she would soon divorce. This also follows her early years.

I would have liked a better introduction to this person, in a better foreword or afterword. I felt a lot of disinterest while I read this because it didn't really help me understand why I should care about this person. The art, on the other hand, was quite good, but that's hardly a reason to recommend this graphic novel.

'Undead Girl Murder Farce 1' by Yugo Aosaki with illustrations by Haruka Tomoyama is a manga about a very unusual detective team,

There is a lot going on in this manga, and this has to be the strangest detective duo I've ever run across. It's also a good mix of supernatural, comic and mystery. It all mostly works as does the art, and I wouldn't mind reading more of this odd couple.

'Chunky' with story and art by Yehudi Mercado is a graphic novel for younger readers about a kid with a weight problem and an imaginary friend named Chunky.

In a story inspired by the author's youth, we meet young Yehudi, overweight, but a sharp-witted kid. He's also prone to injury, so when his parents get him involved in sports, there is always the inevitable injury just waiting to happen. Yehudi tries out for baseball, soccer, swimming and football, but will he ever find his true passion?

I've read a few of this author's graphic novels and I'm a fan. The characters are fun wisecrackers (apparently like the author). The art is a great style and all the ones I've read seem well suited to younger readers.

review:
'Dragon Racer' with story and art by Joey Weiser is a graphic novel sequel to Ghost Hog. If you haven't read that one, I suggest starting there.

Truff and her friends Claude and Stanley are minding their own business when Vern comes crashing in to their neighborhood. He is practicing for a big race that he is determined to win this year. He invites his new friends to come visit at the temple he lives at, but the other residents are wary of Truff, until Truff is needed to help Vern save someone.

I liked this graphic novel for younger readers. The characters are fun as is the story. The art is bright and colorful and I think young readers will really like this.

review:
'Terminal Punks' by Matthew Erman with art by Shelby Criswell is a graphic novel about a struggling band of punks stuck in an airport full of monsters.

Four band members are on the way to a gig in NYC when things go haywire. A plane-load of animals comes in to contact with odd vape flavors and mutates. Now the band is caught between the ravenous monsters and a corporation looking for a cover up. Will they ever get out, and, more importantly, find a name for their band.

This was a goofy, gory ride, and I kind of liked it. The characters are interesting. The premise is fun. I liked the art style a lot.

review:
'Little Book of Kindness' with story and pictures by Francesca Pirrone is a book for younger readers with a lesson in being nice to others.

Some things to do to be kind are followed by pictures showing the results. Things like 'Lend a helping hand' show a bird in Winter and our guide, the pig, building a birdhouse to help keep the bird warm. There are things like taking turns or being patient and saying thank you.

They are simple concepts, and perfect for little readers to learn early. The wordless illustrations form the story of what happens when we choose kindness.
