review:
“The Shadow of Perseus“ by Claire Heywood is a novel about the Greek hero, told by three of the women in his life.

Danae, his mother, was banished from her kingdom when she became pregnant because an oracle foretold her son would be at the death of her father. Perseus grows up and meets Medusa, who sees him as an injured boy and tries to help. In return, Perseus takes her head. Andromeda just wanted to help her family out when Perseus finds her tied to a rock and takes her from her family. In all instances, there is the Perseus we think we know and the deconstruction of that legend.

There is a current trend in literature to remake Greek heroes from a feminine perspective. Some of these retellings are pretty good. This one is pretty average. I enjoyed it, but there are better versions of these kinds of tales out there.

review:
“The Brilliant Calculator: How Mathematician Edith Clark Helped Electrify America“ by Jan Lower, with illustrations by Susan Reagan, is the true story about a young woman who loved math.

Little Edith Clark, loved numbers and puzzles and calculations. She wanted to be an engineer, but that wasn’t a profession she could have as a woman. This didn’t stop Edith from following her passion. She constructed a “Calculator“ from paper that was faster than doing math by hand, and helped America get lights and telephones running.

This was a really interesting story about somebody that I really didn’t know anything about. I loved learning about Edith Clark and the illustrations work really great. I recommend this for young readers.

review:
“Legends & Lattes” by Travis Baldree was the April pick for my online book club.

Viv enters Newtown as a battle weary adventurer. She wants a new life. With the treasure she’s picked up along the way, she decides to start a new business that is unlike anything the town has ever seen. Her new life thrives, and she accrues some new friends and some old enemies.

This was a pretty cozy story and very heartwarming for a good half of the book. I was hoping for more conflict, but eventually the conflict caught up with the story. I really liked the characters in this novel and it was a decent read.

review:
'Banana Sunday' by Paul Toin and Colleen Coover with art by Rian Sygh is a fun story about a normal young woman and her three extraordinary primates.

Kirby Steinberg is going to a new school and she announces it on a Sunday. The reason she does is because of her three talking primates. Chuck is an orangutan and whip-smart. Knobby is a spider-monkey who is in love with love thanks to the love poems he has read. Go-Go the gorilla is small, kind of simple, and indestructible.

Kirby meets a new friend, a reporter named Nickels who wants to know the story behind Kirby's friends. Kirby also makes a new enemy in Skye, the school snob who is out to smear Kirby's name. Can Kirby survive her first week at her new school?

It's an early collaboration from Tobin and Coover, and it's not as good as others. It's still kind of fun, as long as you don't scratch the surface too much. If you do, there are things that don't seem to work so well. I liked the art too. It's bright and the lines are clean.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Oni Press and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

review:
“Pickhead Volume One: Bayou Beasties“ by Brremaud with art by Rigano Giovanni is a graphic novel about a tenacious little girl who likes animals.

Pickhead got her name because she always carries around a miner's pick, and because she’s also a little bit pigheaded. When her sister gets a job in the bayou, Pickhead will do anything to see her. Her willpower means nothing will get in her way.

The story felt like a tall tale and I liked it. I think kids would have a good time reading this one. The art is pretty fun too. I liked Pickhead’s can-do attitude and her willingness to make friends.

“Shakira“ by Maria, Isabel, Sanchez Vergara with her by Leah Laura Diaz is a non-fiction biography for young readers about the famous singer.

Little Shakira loved to perform. At 14 she recorded her first album in Latin America, and even though it wasn’t a success, she carried on. With her worldwide fame, she started a foundation to help children in her native country of Colombia and other countries.

This series never fails to impress me with the subjects they choose. Shakira’s story is inspiring, and the art is great.

review:
“The Man Who Shot Chris Kyle: an American legend“ by Fabien Nury with art by Brüno is a graphic novel that explores the true story around the killing of Chris Kyle, American sniper,

Told him a documentary style composed of news stories, autobiography and other relevant things, this tells the story of Chris Kyle from the rise of his legend to his violent murder. Learn more about the killer as well as the making of the movie and the rise to success of Tara Kyle, Chris Kyle’s widow.

I liked the art style, as well as the documentary style of this graphic novel. It deals with some tough truths, but I think it does it fairly.
