'War and Peace: The Graphic Novel' by Leo Tolstoy with adaptation by Alexandr Poltorak with art by Dmitry Chukhrai is a pretty ambitious project.

Taking place during the Napoleoic attack on Moscow, this story follows the lives of various people with various fortunes. In one storyline a man inherits his father's fortune. In others there are romance plots and the lives of those marching in the army.

I have never finished War and Peace, so I don't know if this adaptation will help someone write a successful book report, but it feels like a good overview of the main plots. The art style is meant to mimic painting of the era, but to me it felt a bit oversaturated and a bit unclear. I still liked reading this though.

In a series of lush illustrations, we follow a unicorn from the dawn of unicorns through to the birth of a new unicorn. A tiny faun and a fairy accompany the unicorn through blowing petals, flocks of birds and blowing leaves.

The verse that weaves through the book brings a good weight to the art and is really nice, but the illustrations are really why I liked this book.

'Sleeping Beauty Act I' with story and art by Karina is a graphic novel that links the sleeping beauty story in more than one way.

Oxana, a dancer from the end of the 19th century, is a brilliant dancer. While dancing the Sleeping Beauty ballet, she is cursed to sleep by a spurned admirer and when she awakens, it's the present day. She somehow knows that she needs to complete the dance and with the help of some talented students, she just might.

The curse, in this volume, only seems to bring this fish out of water to our world, and without it, I lost interest in the story. It may be a more interesting story arc overall, but I found it dull. I did like Karina's manga style art.

'Mayam Vol. 1: The Terran Delegation' by Stephen Desberg with illustrations by Daniel Koller is a graphic novel story of an unscrupulous treasure hunter that is a bit hard to like.

Lenny June is on Tyr Mayam as an expat, sleeping around, swiping artifacts and living his best life. That is until his fiancee shows up on the planet and all hell breaks loose.

It was hard to like the main character, and I think we are supposed to. It makes what happens later in the story mean less.

'A Wee Boo' by Jessica Boyd with illustrations by Brooke Kerrigan is a picture book about a tiny ghost trying to earn her haunting license.

Poor Wee Boo is too tiny to scare anyone, and she wants to be accredited like the other ghosts. She is given a third chance. When she fails to scare a child, and instead makes it laugh, she thinks she might have found a new calling.

This book was pretty adorable. Wee Boo is cute and decidedly not scary, but the other ghosts do come across a bit scary, so it might be best to thumb through this first for sensitive young readers.

'A Place for Pauline' by Anouk Mahiout with illustrations by Marjolaine Perreten is a picture book told in comic book form about a young girl trying to find her place.

Pauline lives with her parents and 2 younger siblings with another on the way. The house is loud and she is always getting blamed for doing too much or too little. She has a hideout, but it's time to move on, so she starts to plan.

This was a sweet story that made me laugh. The art is pretty great too! I love stories that have charm and heart and I think older siblings will relate to Pauline.

'The Atrocities' by Jeremy C. Shipp was a novella that I wanted to absolutely love, and for most of it, I did.

When Danna Valdez is hired for a governess job, the creepy hedge maze just to get to the front door should have been her first warning. The gruesome art lining all the walls should have shooed her away. When Danna finds out that the child she is hired to teach is dead, and believed to be a ghost, I realized that Danna is made of sterner stuff than me.

The gorgeous prose created such a great mood. The mix of gothic creepiness with the reminders that this is the modern age were handled deftly. Some of the supporting characters were cluelessly ignorant, and they helped lighten up the story. I was hoping for a really interesting ending, but the ending left me a little disappointed. I still really enjoyed reading this gothic, creepy novel.
